Pro Ana Tips


  1. RULES, RULES, RULES. This is important. You need to set rules for yourself, and if you are truly ana, you will have no problem sticking to them because you are STRONG! Rules are everything. Examples: Don't eat anything white. Do not, under any circumstances, eat after 6:00. Don't eat before 3:00. Cut each bite into x amount of pieces, chew x amount of times. Do not eat anything that has over 3 grams of fat. Make your own and keep adding to them.
  2. Ana must be the center of your life.
  3. Drink a full glass of water before you eat and then sip a full glass between bites, you'll get full much faster. Remember it takes 20 minutes for the brain to realize the stomach is full.
  4. Eat denser food because it feels like more. Light and fluffy foods compact in your digestive tract and you will feel hungry soon after.
  5. Take out only the amount of food you plan to eat and don't allow seconds.
  6. Think before you eat. Don't eat while distracted (TV, etc). Stop and consider if you really want to eat that then consciously give yourself permission.
  7. 4 100-calorie meals is better than one 400-calorie meal.
  8. Never eat anything bigger than about a cup, your stomach will expand and you'll get hungry more. If you need to, eat more frequently, not bigger amounts.
  9. Slim-Fast and other "healthy" bars and shakes have more carbs and calories than in the meal they're intended to replace. Stay away.
  10. Drink at least a glass of water every hour. It's better for weight loss to sip throughout the day than to chug a full glass (except before eating, in which case it can make you eat less, or make you slightly nauseous so you don't want to eat at all). Try keeping a water bottle somewhere you'll see it a lot, like every 10-20 minutes, and take a drink from it every time you see it/notice it.
  11. Drink up to a shot of apple cider vinegar before eating, it's supposed to minimize fat absorption. Also speeds metabolism and can help curb cravings. Drinking more than a shot causes a vague nausea which helps suppress appetite.
  12. Ice or gum are good food substitutes. Celery works too if you're really hungry.
  13. Use small, dark colored plates. Dark blue or black makes you eat less, and smaller plates and utensils cause you to take smaller portions from the start.
  14. Make a list of "bad" foods. Periodically, cross one of the list and pledge to never, ever eat it again. Eventually there will be none left.
  15. Eat in front of a mirror, naked or in underwear if possible. If you can't, carry a picture of yourself in a revealing outfit and look at it when you want to eat. When you have cravings pinch your fat and look at your problem areas, don't add to them!
  16. Eat a lot of fiber for digestive health and low calories.
  17. Create a methodical routine for eating. Cut food into tiny pieces, count your bites and the number of times you chew, set your utensils down between bites, and sip water between bites. Add other rules or rituals of your own.
  18. Eat higher-calorie items earlier in the day so you have more time to burn them off; if you eat late eat light or it will be more likely to be stored as fat due to inactivity. Try not to eat too late, sleep burns calories and is a good opportunity to burn fat with little effort. The body must burn through all digesting food before taking energy from stored food (fat).
  19. When you go out, take very little money or only enough to buy whatever non-food item you plan on buying. This will make it harder to buy food on impulse.
  20. Don't take bites, either from others' food or while cooking, as the calories add up surprisingly fast and you may not realize how much extra you're taking in.
  21. Write down everything you eat and its calories. This will make you think before eating and also make you more aware of how much food and calories you are actually consuming. You can also write down other things such as how you're feeling, who you're with, place, time, and why you chose to eat it, this will help you track patterns in your eating behavior.
  22. Wear a rubber band around your wrist and snap it when you want to eat. Food = pain.
  23. Set a time you cannot eat past. 6:00 or 7:00pm are good choices. This is especially helpful if you are prone to night binging. Then make a rule that you cannot eat before 6:00 or 7:00AM, this is like having a 12-hr fast every day.
  24. You shouldn't eat for at least 3 hours before going to bed. The extra hours will help burn off the calories. If you eat soon before sleeping, you absorb more calories due to inactivity and you put on weight.
  25. Have a peppermint or peppermint tea. Peppermint decreases hunger.
  26. Brush your teeth when you want to eat. The clean feeling and mint aftertaste will put you off food.
  27. Press on your stomach when it grumbles. TUMS also stop stomach growling and have calcium.(5 calories a piece so be careful!)
  28. Carry a list of all the reasons you want to be thin and avoid food. Look at it when you want to eat to remind yourself why you won't. Or, write a new list every time you want to eat. It'll distract you, postpone eating, and thinking of the reasons will inspire you.
  29. Cut a ribbon the size you want your waist to be. wrap and tie it around your wrist like a bracelet. Every time you look at it you'll be reminded of your goals. When you're tempted, take it off and wrap it around your waist. See how close you are, or how far you have to go, and resist the temptation.
  30. Always leave at least one bite of food on your plate. This will help you to be able to stop eating and prevent binges. It will also stop you from compulsively finishing portions even when you have eaten enough.
  31. Save $1 for every meal you don't eat, then use the money to buy yourself a non-food present.
  32. Friends will only get in the way. Avoid them until you reach your goals.
  33. Never eat in secret. This is a terrible habit that leads to compulsive binging. If you wouldn't eat it in front of all your friends you shouldn't be eating it at all! Also if you only eat around other people they will know that you do eat and assume you eat alone as well, thus lessening suspicion that you have an ED.
  34. Never eat out of a box or jar. Always eat from a plate or bowl. This will help you in several ways: You will see how much you are really eating; you can determine in advance how much you will eat and not go back for seconds; using a small plate or bowl will make you eat even less; you can count/measure out an exact serving and know the accurate amount of calories you are consuming.
  35. Give clothes to Goodwill as they get too big for you. Don't keep them around "just in case."
  36. If you live alone, put thinspo and/or reverse thinspo pictures on the pantry and refrigerator. A mirror works well too.
  37. When you have hunger pangs, picture your stomach eating away your fat, and that what you feel is the feeling of thinness and your fat burning away. 
  38. Coffee is an appetite suppressant. Drink it black or with Splenda or other no-calorie sweetener.
  39. Count your bites, and the number of times you chew them. Plan in advance how many bites you can have. Then make them smaller or use smaller utensils. 
  40. Paint your nails so you can't eat until the polish dries. Teeth whitening strips are good too.
  41. Drink water before eating. If you're still hungry, drink green tea or broth. If you still need to eat, you'll eat less than you would have.
  42. Eat low-calorie foods with strong flavors. Sometimes you're craving taste, not food. For bouillon, use less water than is recommended. Peppermints, pickles, peppers, and mustard are good choices.
  43. Do not eat anything unless you know the exact amount of calories in it. 
  44. Chew gum while cooking. That way you can't take bites while it is cooking, and you won't want to eat it once it's done.
  45. Keep food out of sight, not sitting out, and stay away from food and the kitchen to keep your mind off it. 
  46. Keep a pocket thinspo in your wallet with your cash so you won't spend money on food.
  47. For sweet cravings, lick a chopstick and dip it into a diet Swiss Miss pack.
  48. Write your current weight on one hand, and your goal weight on the other. When you go to eat, you'll be reminded how fat you are, and how skinny you could be.
  49. The Four D's:
         Distance yourself from food.
         Distract yourself.
         Delay eating
         Decide what your goals really are.
  50. Green tea raises metabolism and is very good for the skin and overall health. Drink it in the morning to increase metabolism for the day. Add lemon to make it more effective and to add a detoxifying aspect.
  51. Hot water with lemon is another good morning drink.
  52. Spicy foods raise metabolism, if you don't like them you can take cayenne pepper capsules available in supplement section of drugstores or health food stores.
  53. Drinking apple cider vinegar is said to raise metabolism, have a few tablespoons, can also be mixed in water (with lemon would be best) or used as salad dressing.
  54. Start the morning with stretching to wake up your muscles, the morning is also the best time to exercise because your body will use stored food (fat) as fuel instead of food you ate. It also processes food better throughout the day and gives you more energy if you exercise in the morning.
  55. Get at least 6 hours of sleep each night, less than this can decrease metabolism by 10% and increase appetite by 15%. You look better and feel better when you have more sleep also if you're sleeping then you're not eating!
  56. Keep good posture, it burns 10% more calories throughout the day. You also look better.
  57. Vitamin B6 and B12 raise metabolism and give you energy.
  58. Eating protein increases your metabolic rate by 14%.

Why would you lower someones self esteem so much that they think its a good idea to develop an eating disorder.     9. I think this website is a good idea. I'm not anorexic, just a normal guy. Its better for people with problems or who think they have problem to write about their feelings... All people are crazy in one way or another, its better to show them and write, its a strong force and one day I hope you all feel happy and dont care about eating or not eating or giving a shit about anything. Life is light that burns brighter than a star and dissapears, do what you love and never look back :)

Is recovery on an out-patient basis even possible? I've tried but it didn't work because I am still hurting (depression, social phobia, GAD) and the only thing that makes me feel better is my eating disorder so I go to pro-ana for comfort and for the short sense of joy it gives me. How do you know if you are ready to recover? And if you are: how do you know if you need to go in residential treatment? (Where people basically force you to eat and control you...) In case you need to know: (TRIGGER WARING FOR ANYONE IN RECOVERY) I am 5'1'' and 87 pounds. I technically have anorexia nervosa because of the weight but if I was a regular weight it would be purging disorder. (I know how to diagnose because I am taking psychology classes in university to.) Anyway, what kind of girls go to residential? I just don't want to be fat compared to everyone else. Thanks for your reply!

I am on pro-ana because I tried recovery and it doesn't work! I wish it did. But I tried recovery and I failed. I will never be happy and the only way to fix that is by the euphoric feeling you get after a purge. So shut up!     11. I personally have found these sites helpful.
      I have suffered from bulimia and depression for the past 6 years. For the first two years i had no support, no one I could talk to. I had no idea of how to make myself feel better in a way which was much better than the ideas going through my head.
      During this time at one point i tried to carve the fat off of my stomach with a stanley blade. Needless to say it didn't go well. Then I found a site similar to this. With people who could understand. Who wouldn't beat or shout at me for being stupid and then in the next breath call me a fat waste of space. I felt some kind of connection with the people I found and they convinced me I could feel better about myself and reach my goals through a better method.
      Now i haven't recovered, I'm not saying that, but restricting my intake and losing weight makes me feel better and thats all i ever wanted.

    4. My ex dumped me because I was getting bigger and he said I was ruining his life because he was gaining weight too. It hit me hard that's when I realized I needed to lose all this fat. I've moved to a new town and I've gained almost 20 pounds. Time to lose 40 pounds! He will regret leaving me once he sees me skinny and beautiful. This site helps a lot.

    1. I personally can go on with my life with about 300 calories per day- plus a fasting day once a week. but it all depends on how active you are, your body size and type, lots of stuff- just play around with your intake and listen to what your body is telling you <3

      You can put in the weight you are, your height, what you want to get to, and when you wanna get there and it will give you the calories that you need to limit to each week until you reach your goal! It even shows you where about your weight should be at the end of each week (perfect if you're a weekly weigher, bad if you're a daily weigher like me... It's NEVER enough, if you ask me... -_-)

    In regards to exercise: do you find it’s easier and/or more effective to carry on with your plan if you don’t exercise? I’ve noticed that if I exercise (i.e., 40 minutes of jogging) then I am more likely to eat more for dinner or something because I am more hungry and tired. Thoughts?

    1. When you exercise at night take a shower and go to sleep. If you exercise in the morning eat a breakfast of fruit and drink water. If your still hungry eat some celery.

      When people (friends, family, bloggers) approach you (pro-ana) with concern, it is not because they think you should be "happy being fat". They are approaching you because you are mentally unsound.

      Websites like this one (which I am currently using for PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH) provide a "support system" for bad habits. They have these websites for pedophiles, too. It is a way to feel supported in your disorder, and a way for you to continue your own cognitive distortions.

      Inside all of us is a young version of ourselves. Imagine 3 year old you - he/she is hungry. Would you deprive a 3 year old of nutrition and tell her/him how fat they are? Would you slap a rubber band on your 3 year old so they know not to eat unless it is between the hours of 3 and 6 pm? I would hope not - because that is considered child abuse. What about your pet? Or your 95 year old grandmother? Would you deprive them of food? Because that is also considered abuse.

      Show me any peer reviewed journal article that disagrees with me. Otherwise, stop abusing yourself. You are smarter and worth more than this.

    1. Hi there, I am bullimic and anorexic. I used to be extremely overweight and felt useless. I started to starve myself one day and two years later i have heart, liver and brain problems. I can no longer digest food properly or speak normally due to the bullimia. You seem to me like a strong minded individual, as well as very intelligent. Please do not be taken in by the end result, it leads to death. I may not have long but YOU will. Do not let your weight pull you down, you are a lot healthier than everybody on this site. If you really are wanting to lose weight though, why dont you talk to somebody and maybe go on walks and jogs every few days and instead of eating snacks, replace them with fruit and veg.     For years, I've been ridiculed because of my weight. I began to steadily gain weight after my first period in September 2007. My mother put me on diets and ensured that I had adequate physical activity, but my weight increased. In eleventh grade-six months ago, I was diagnosed with PCOS and thyroiditis. I also have celiac disease. My PCOS makes it extremely difficult for me to lose weight & I now have a voracious appetite. I don't want to be 235 pounds any more. Girls say things about me under their breath, boys laugh at me, and I'm the only one out of my friends who has never had a boyfriend. My prom is in May 2014... Five months from now, and I'm so desperate to lose weight. I want to be able to shop at places like GAP, Hollister, and Rue 21 without crying. I do binge and purge from time to time, but I'm unsure if that would be classified as bulimia since I don't do it on a regular basis. I just want to be beautiful. I show my friends, family, and teachers photos of me before I became fat... They don't believe their eyes. I hate myself! I hate that I have stretch marks on my arms, stomach, and legs! I just want my muscular figure back... I want a boyfriend, I want my first kiss, I just want people to say "wow, girl... You look fine!" I've always been against degrading females, and my next few words are going to go against my morals. However, I want to be referred to as "fine," "hot," and "sexy".     -hunger pangs
    -fainting
    -lanugo
    -joint pain
    -hair loss
    -feeding tubes
    -organ damage
    -hospitals
    -eventually residential hospitalization
    -and most of all, major self hatred: I hated my body so much more than before anorexia

    After eating disorder recovery:
    -happy
    -healthy
    -social
    -boyfriend who likes me no matter what my body looks like
    -being able to sleep in my own bed
    -self love, loving my body even though it's not "perfect"

    Which would you rather have? Because pursuing these eating disorder behaviors will DEFINITELY give you the shittiest life you can imagine. I promise you that.

I had an eating disorder and it was the most happiest I had ever been, the thought of not eating and not even being bothered was good, I was in control of something and things were how I wanted them to be, I was happy and now I'm over that I'm not happy I hate myself I've put weight on and it was the worst thing that I have done and all for making other people happy!!     1. you are still obviously ill if you think you're well and that is the way you still think. people who have never had an eating disorder may not understand how it feels to have one, but anyone with any sense will know that not eating is detrimental to your help and if a fellow human being sees another harming themselves, if they have any compassion they are going to want to help and online the only possible way to try and reach you is writing something counter to what you think is 'ok'. the only reason you do think it is ok is because you are ill, because no matter how many ways you try to defend it, you are harming yourself and sites like this are only encouraging this behaviour, not supporting it. it is not healthy behaviour to hate yourself for eating and putting weight on, hating yourself in any shape or form is only going to have negative repercussions. get yourself help, i'm not saying this to 'have a go' or because i have no idea what i'm talking about, i'm saying it because i care about other people.

  53. I believe all these comments are coming from people who know EXACTLY what it is like to have an eating disorder- so contrary to your statement we do have an idea. And- I do not think there is "hate" but more education. These comments are educating young girls what ED are really like. While I am glad your eating disorder was (is) so pleasant, that is rare. Research suggest the contrary- in fact it has the highest death rate of any mental illness. I have suffered for more than ten years and they were the worst ten years of my life. I have done permanent damage to my body that I can not undue. So, unlike you I believe more of these comments need to be posted to let all the young girls who are contemplating anorexia/bulimia what the disease is really like. Or least give them both sides- yours and mine included. Of course the ED is seductive and it has its benefits (if it didn't no one would have the disease) but people need to realize the grave dangers as well. It is only fair.

Your pee should be straw colored, dried grass straw not stripey drinking straw! I drink boiled tap water, I used to drink about 7 litres a day but I cut down.

  67. You don't have to starve yourselves to death. Their are family members and the rest of society fighting for you guys to quit dying to be thin. Picking up a sport or an activity that involves easy physical activity and supports healthy eating helps. It not only helps you lose fat for example, but helps also gain a toned healthy looking body. You feel better about your self when you continue to have success. Not where you are always down on yourself because you are skinny enough and you just have to keep losing weight. I definitely don't want to dis you all that are really trying to obtain a skinny body or those who have finally done through a difficult road. I'm really saying, that there is a safer and more healthier way to accomplish it. Trust me. I am on swim team now. It was a challenge and difficult, but it made me work harder at my goal. I continue to grow with more confidence than ever before. I love seeing success through my hard work. It really makes a difference. You've got to believe me. Quit dying to be thin. Love what you have now. Your families love you and care for you, even when you don't think so. You may not believe me on that, but through tough times it makes you so strong.

Because she took tips of this very website because she thought she wasn't skinny enough. She looked in the mirror every night and said she wasn't beautiful. Well guess what, SHE F**KING WAS!!!

Your daughter was and remains to be beautiful, in life and death. I am a suffering anorexic teen and am trying to get people away from this website.   88. I started this a 120lbs. And I ate little and workout. Every time I ate, I would hurry and throw it all up. And I would lose weight everyday. So I was 110.5 yesterday, and I didn't eat one thing, all I had was four glasses of water. And when I check my weight in the day, it was 111. Starving isn't working! Help! I want to be 90 at the moment but my overall over is 45lbs. HELP ME PLEASE. BTW: I'm 15, 5'2, 111lbs.

  89. this is so stupid. don't you all know what your'e putting your bodies through?? for the past year now i have been in recovery from an ed (anorexia nervosa), it's been so hard and iv'e had a lot of other medical issues during my recovery, paranoia, anxiety, headaches, fatique, it's too much of a shock for your bodies to handle and you WILL kill yourself unless you decide to stand up to ana. It was the best thing i ever did, i am so much happier and healthier, my hair is shiny, my skin and eyes are glowing, i look and feel healthier in my self, i'm eating healthy and working out... still allowing my self one treat a day anything from chocolate to ice cream... i'm seeing my friends a whole lot more. and yet i'm still a uk size 6/8 and for once in my life i actually find my body to be quite attractive. please take my advice and stand up to ana, get out whilst you can, it's not to late... ana is a mind controlling bully, you are strong and beautiful and you can beat this, i promise.

    My parents almost committed me to the psych ward to be tube fed (they couldn't because I was over 18). If you are not already depressed - anorexia can cause depression. I have survived two near suicide attempts - my friends were suspicious and forced me to sleep over at their houses. Please, please don't do it. Once you start there is no going back. You can (and probably will) die. My BMI is low and it I am not recovered in the next two years (which I probably won't be because recovery is hard - I might have to go to eating disorder rehab - which sounds scary). Please don't do it. A lot of girls get eating disorders because they are depressed, have anxiety disorders or survived a traumatic experience. If this is you PLEASE find a psychologist and talk to him/her. If you need someone to email reply to my comment and I will give you my email address. Please note though, yes I am anorexic but no: I don't give tips. I am here to support you and be a friend but I will NOT encourage this!

Instead of eating normally and healthy and going to exercise, you're starving to achieve a body that is unrealistic and unattainable. I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince people who don't think i'm right, because truth is, you'll probably never listen to what people like me have to say. i'm healthy, always have been, and a 13 year old girl. Body image is ruined by society, models, and high demanding expectations of us and this 'Pro Ana' sites are really not helping. Go on if you want, destroy your hard working body that is trying to keep you alive, and listen to your disease. Because it has become your best friend.

  95. the main trick to feeling good and staying healthy while loosing weight is to eat as much food that you need for proper nutrition but with the least amount of calories.
    I have been reaching my nutritional needs every day from under 1000 calories a day. Therefore an 800 calorie deficit at least per day (not counting all the exercise I do). On average I would loose at least 2 kilograms a week. If I do more exercise, I will loose much more in a week. Im in my first week and it is working well so far.

  101. People who are trying to "help": Leaving negative, harsh comments is not going to magically make these people think they are beautiful and it will definitely not change their minds about their goals. Hatred fuels anorexia.
    They need to be shown kindness and love.
    I personally do not suffer from anorexia, nor do I ever want to. I love food :D not to the point where I eat more than my body allows, but I do eat until I am full and satisfied without drinking water between every bite.
    I completely understand the mentality. I pay very close attention to my body, but not to my weight. I am 5' 8 1/2" and have not weighed myself in probably over a year. My weight does not matter to me- it is how I look. How I want to see myself in the mirror. And 95% of the time I'm completely happy with how thin I am. I could always use some work, but that's just my mentality. I always like to work on myself. I do cardio to lose fat, but also do exercises to tone up my muscles so I'm not just skin and bones. I understand wanting to have control over your body and wanting to shape it to the way you see it in your head. And that is completely possible- the right way.
    Eat 6 small meals a day, that are healthy maybe even vegan if that seems better to you, and then run on the treadmill or go to a cycling class and do some exercises to tone up muscles that burn off the calories you've eaten that day. But the nutrients will stay in your body giving you glowing skin and a beautiful complexion. It will ensure that you will age beautifully and live a long and happy life.
    For those who simply cannot eat- you just find it impossible and revolting- start small. Eat stews that are thicker and have lots of veggies. Snack throughout the day on crackers or nuts and then eat one good, wholesome meal a day to start with.
    It is possible to be the best you that you can be, and be healthy in the process.
    If you choose to ignore my advice, then that is up to you. If you choose to try and live a healthier lifestyle, then I applaud you. And you have also now become one of the few that can say "I beat anorexia". And that in and of itself is an accomplishment.
    I don't think any of you are wrong for feeling how you do- I think there is a better way to go about it. But I do have to say- just because you are fuller in figure does not mean you are ugly to society.

  103. Please, girls (and guys?), don't do this to yourselves. If you want to be thin, eat lots of healthy foods and workout. I jog every day and do lots of sit-ups and crunches. Exercise and healthy eating habits is very good for you. But starving yourself, lying to the people who care about you, is very unhealthy. A close family friend recently passed away because of her ED. If you feel trapped and unable to escape your ED, seek help. Please, don't throw your life away like this.
